FORTY-FOUR

ELLIE

Rowan looked like she was really about to lose it. Is that what being pregnant does to you? I hope I never find out.

I message Dad.

How’s it going in the Big Apple? Are you coming home soon? Because you’ve left me with a crazy woman. I could call the authorities.

He answers a moment later.

All good – we’ve signed the deal. I might regret asking, but what’s going on with Rowan this time?

She couldn’t find her phone, turned the house upside down and it was on the table next to her the whole time.

There is a pause. ‘Turned the house upside down’ are not words Dad likes to hear.

He answers:

Try to get along. I’ll be home tomorrow night.

I can’t say we get along exactly, but we peacefully co-exist the rest of the evening. Rowan messages to see if I want some dinner. We eat at the same table. It is on the quiet side – she doesn’t say anything – but that is fine with me.

She leaves the dishes, goes upstairs. I sigh, eye the table. Take the dishes into the kitchen and load the dishwasher. The sofa cushions are still all over the place, but I didn’t contribute to that mess, and so I leave them where they are.

I go to my room and try to work on coursework, but I can’t stop seeing the look on Stuart’s face, hearing the things that he said. I almost wish Rowan had stayed downstairs, that we could have watched TV or something so I’m not alone with my thoughts.

Almost, but not quite.
